How to number pages on microsoft word?

I have the 2010 version of Microsoft Word, and I need to know how to get it to automatically number pages. I click on "insert" on the top of the page, and then I see the icon under 'header and footer' where it says 'page number'. When I click on this, though, I no longer know what to do. Help?
